New website launch!

With a great amount of excitement, we are delighted to officially launch the new Sandford St. Martin’s First School website.  Today we are cutting the ribbon on a project that is going to evolve and develop over the course of the next 8 months.  Through consultation, discussion, experimentation and avenues not yet clear to us, we will be using the time until September to hone and develop the site so that when we launch as Sandford St. Martin’s Primary School in September, we can rebrand and be ready to go.

Gold scissors cutting red ribbon. You don't get more official than that....

It’s all very exciting stuff, and we hope that you will all come along for the ride, comment regularly support and encourage us and be active partners in our online community!

One Response to New website launch!

  1. Chantelle Muzzelle says:

I would just like to say it’s fabulous to have all this information available via a mobile friendly website. Not only is it extremely useful but it shows that the school is keeping updated with technology and that can only be a positive thing for the pupils.

MPS Fundraising Day

On Tuesday the 15th of May our School Council organised a fundraising day for The MPS society.  Jasmine Cutler in Hawthorn class visited our School Council meeting to ask if we would help raise money for the charity as her three year old brother Josh has Hunter Disease.

The School Council were really pleased to get involved and organised a non-uniform day inviting all the children to wear blue and donate one pound. The School Councillors also provided delicious sweet treats to sell at our Cake Sale after school to help raise extra money.  Thank you to everyone involved for making it a very special day.  We will let you know how much money we raised in the next day or two!

New Uniform Trial!

Although we are not yet in a position to sell the new items of uniform we are offering an opportunity for parents to test out the sizes of the new uniform jumpers/cardigans and t-shirts so that you can make the decision about which is the correct size to order for your child.

From Monday of next week (the 21st May), each class in school will have a selection of the new uniform sizes for you to try out on your child.  Please be aware that the sizing packs we have only include one item of each size, so there may be a little waiting around, however we felt this was an important opportunity for you to see be able to make the correct decision about your child’s new uniform.

The four items school will be providing are embroidered book bags, embroidered T-Shirt, a tie and an embroidered cardigan/jumper.  All other items of clothing are available from a large number of superstore outlets.

Please click this link here to access the new uniform information list.

We will provide you with uniform order forms when you come into school.  The following days have been allocated to the different classes – the uniform to test will be in your child’s classroom at the end of the day.

Olive – Monday 21st May

Willow – Tuesday 22nd May

Hawthorn – Wednesday 23rd May

Saplings – Thursday 24th May

Swimming Pool

We are pleased to inform you that swimming begins straight after the June half term.  Could we please ask for a £10.00 contribution for your child in year 1-4, and £6.50 for each additional sibling.  The donation for all Saplings children is £6.50.  This money is used to cover some of the pool running costs.  Children will be swimming once per week but sessions are equivalent to two shorter sessions as in previous years.  Please could donations be handed into school by Wednesday 30th May.

The swimming pool is costly to maintain and upkeep, both financially and in the time commitment required from a small number of laudable volunteers.  Without enough contributions we will not be in a position to offer this facility at school.

Please clearly mark your contributions ‘SWIMMING’ and send into the school office stating your child’s name and class.  Cheques payable to:-

Sandford St Martins Swimming Pool

Swimming Hats MUST be worn at all times and are available from the school office for £1

PLEASE NOTE – If you can help at any swim session, please give your name to the office ASAP as sessions may be at risk without the correct cover required.

The pool is also available to hire in the evenings from 3pm until 6pm for £30 only.  The hirer will be responsible for providing a registered first aider.

The Big Final!

OK, so the final’s not at Wembley, and the winning cup is not going to look like the one in the picture, but all the same, it’s just over a week until our big final verses Bere Regis.

Kick off is at 3.45 on Wednesday 16th May at the recreation ground in Bere Regis.  We are hopeful for as much support as possible to cheer on our team of talented dribblers.  Come on the blue and whites!!

‘Bike It’ award

Today we welcomed Jonathan Dixon into school to join us in celebration assembly.  He had come in to share the exciting news that we have been selected as a Sustrans Bike It school – a very welcome step towards us becoming a more environmentally and fitness aware community.

He unveiled the news to the whole school and even presented us with a banner to celebrate yet another achievement on the fence outside the front of school…!

We also talked about the benefits of cycling and scooting, particularly in this Olympic year, and Jonathan launched a challenge for everyone who wanted to take part.  The challenge is called ‘Sustrans Heroes’ and it runs until the end of June.  Children are given tasks to complete that directly connect with the Olympic values, and for each one completed they will receive a point.  Those who score enough points will win a certificate or medal to show how well they have done.  The best part is, it can all be done at home and signed off by a parent or carer, so the whole family could get involved if you want to!

Read more about Sustrans Heroes here, or click the link here to download your own Sustrans Heroes booklet.  Jonathan also did some quick polls to find out how much we were using our bikes and scooters now, and hopefully in the future when we do the same poll we will see that we have become better – more environmentally friendly, fitter and healthier.

New School Logo!!

Finally, after 7 months of discussions, revisions, colour charts, sleepless nights etc. we are very proud to reveal to you all the new school logo for Sandford St. Martin’s Primary School.

For a fuller explanation of the holistic meaning behind the different parts of the logo, please see our latest newsletter, however the dragonfly, the cross and the cut diamond together create a wonderful symbol and story of our school, and we are already feeling quite at home with it!

Please let us know what you think!

Marvellous Maths

On Monday, four of our Year 4 children were lucky enough to go to the Purbeck School to attend a Maths session aimed at extending their talents with number crunching.  The session was lead by Year 11 children and lasted all morning.  We’re very pleased that we are able to take advantage of these links with our neighbouring schools and are grateful to them for setting up such opportunities.  Well done to the fab four! (One of whom was ill when we took the picture…!)

Site Security

Before Easter an intruder was able to enter our premises, steal a handbag and then a car from our car park.  This is of course a major concern for us as an unidentified and uninvited person was in our school for the wrong reasons.  As you would expect, we have reacted to this by reviewing thoroughly our procedures and making changes to ensure we are doing everything possible to guarantee your child’s safety.  We have identified that at the start of the school day the site has not been adequately secure.

With immediate effect, we are changing the system of dropping children off at school.  This is for reasons of child protection and the security of the school building.   We believe this new system will increase the security of our site and will also provide an additional contact point between parents/carers and your child’s teacher.

From now on, we would like to ask that children enter the school building at the beginning of the day through their own class’ outside door.  Willow class will enter through Olive class’ door, and Hazel will enter through the back door by the church.  A teacher or TA will be on the door to supervise the entry and will be available to take short messages or information that may help us to be of more support to your children.

KS2 doors will be open and supervised by staff members from 8.35am until 8.45am and Saplings and KS1 doors will be open and supervised from 8.45am until 8.55am.  Children arriving after that time will be asked to go through the reception to sign in.  As before, parents/carers of children in KS2 are asked to leave their child to enter and organise themselves (this helps children to continue to develop independence), however parents/carers of Saplings and KS1 children are welcome to enter the classroom to help them get organised for the start of their learning.  Please ensure that if you enter the building for this purpose, you leave from the same door through which you entered.

The Car Park gates will be locked at 9am promptly, and will open again from 2.50pm until 3.20pm.  Mrs Harding and Mrs Brock will continue to be available in reception for any additional enquiries.

Procedures for collecting children from school will remain unchanged.

We will review the success of this new system after a couple of weeks.  Although we appreciate that there may be some additional inconvenience for some parents, our principal responsibility is to the safety of your children in our care and this is at the heart of all we do.  We thank you for your cooperation while the new system settles into a routine.
